Chronic Pain
Cannabis becoming the safe alternative for chronic
pain: Recent U.S. polls indicate that Americans
over the age of 65 represent 14 percent of the population who use
more than 30 percent of all prescription drugs, including highly
addictive painkillers such as OxyCotin, Vicodin, Codeine, Morphine,
and many others. Many of these opioid drugs are causing overdose and
deaths when abused, or get into the wrong hands of street dealers.
However, a recent study by American Associates, Ben-Gurion
University of the Negev (BGU) and the Cannabis Clinical Research
Institute at Soroka University Medical Center monitored a group of
patients 65 and older for six months. What they found is that
medical cannabis treatment significantly relieves pain and improves
quality of life for seniors with minimal to no side effects. The
new study published in The European Journal of Internal medicine,
found cannabis therapy is safe and effective for elderly patients
seeking to address chronic pain, cancer symptoms, PTSD, Parkinson's
disease, colitis, multiple sclerosis, and other medical conditions.
BGU researchers surveyed 2,736 patients that were 65 years
and older who received cannabis treatment. More than 60 percent were
prescribed cannabis for chronic pain and pain associated with
cancer. More than 93 percent of those tested reported that their
pain dropped to more than half and their quality of life
significantly improved. The most commonly used method of consuming
the cannabis was from cannabis-infused oil and vaporization. Most
common side effects were dizziness (9%), and dry mouth (7%). The
researchers indicate through their findings that cannabis may
decrease dependence on prescription drugs, including opioids.
