Call Me Brick

Description of Picture.

It was the Erie Gold Rush of 1975 when we were finally on the map for quality cannabis. Back in the day, I’m sure you have heard that phrase before; but seriously, we were smoking some bunk weed in the late 60’s early 70’s. The majority of the commercial weed was Mexican brick pot and it sucked. Once in a while you could get some good Jamaican if you knew someone who traveled to California and brought some back. But then I picked up the 1974 fall smugglers edition of High Times and that changed everything. I opened to the centerfold and there she was; a 35 lb. brick of Columbian Gold (Punto Rojo), a pure Landrace strain from the Tierra Adentro region of Southern Columbia. Then I flipped through the magazine and came across some Tasty Treasures from the late 60's early 70's. Tai Stick, Lebanese hash, Jamaican Coil Bud, Columbian Wacky Weed, and the all star strain Columbian Gold Colas (sometimes called Champaign gold).

Tasty Treasures

The real super star here was the Columbian Gold Bud that hit the streets of Erie County in the winter of 1975. A 65lb. bale of the most beautiful Columbian Gold Flower that I have ever seen. This stuff was the bomb! These buds clocked in at 23% THC and really got you stoned. The taste was exceptional with a sweet hash taste that cannot be duplicated by any other strain. The high was kick-ass and novice smokers were left stupefied and speechless. The gold bud was selling for $50 an ounce, $150 quarter lb., and $500 lb. These beautiful buds were gone within two weeks and this was the new sought-after strain well into the 70’s and 80’s.

I remember a friend in Florida when 850 lbs. of Colombian Gold Bales were delivered to his home fresh off the docks of Miami. Most of the Columbian in that area came from Miami and was distributed up the coast to Tampa and Gainesville Florida, the two college towns. From there dealers would distribute to different parts of the country, mainly the East Coast. "Those were the Days."

Columbian Gold -  Discovered in South America, the Columbian Gold landrace strain is a pure sativa strain. Columbian Gold is named after the Santa Marta mountains of Columbia, and sometimes this marijuana strain is also called Santa Marta Columbian Gold or Santa Marta. This Columbian landrace strain has a high THC content of 19% - 23%. Columbian Gold was introduced to the US in the 1960s and is now used in the crossbreeding of popular hybrids.
The main terpene, limonene, gives the strain an aroma and flavor of lemon and lime, though it also produces pungent, skunky aromas that can overtake a room. This indigenous sativa parented the famous Skunk #1, a hybrid that has become a staple of cannabis breeding. Other strains that trace their lineage back to Colombian Gold include AK-47, Orange Bud, and Haze. Time to kick back, roll up a 1g joint, and enjoy reminiscing the good old days of Columbian Gold.
