420 Celebration
420 becomes a worldwide celebration: Probably
everyone has heard the catchphrase 420 even if they do not smoke
marijuana. Now, April 20th has become a worldwide holiday
celebration for all cannabis users. So, how did 420 come about and
spread culture to culture uniting people across the globe.
Well, as the story goes, a group of five wisecracking
friends from Marin County, California originated the term 420 in
1971 at San Rafael High School. They called themselves the Waldos.
One of the teen’s named Steve was given a map to a marijuana patch
on the Point Reyes Peninsula. The map was given to him by a friend
whose brother was in the coast guard and growing cannabis. Being in
the coastguard, he grew a little paranoid when it came harvest time,
so he gave permission to the Waldos to harvest the crop. The boys
all got together and met at 4:20 p.m., caught a buzz and headed out
to search for the patch.
The Waldos used the term 420 Louie at first to remind each
other of their after-school quest. After a while they dropped the
Louie part and just used the phrase 420 to refer to cannabis. As the
Waldos continued to use the term 420 so did friends and
acquaintances. Even members of the Grateful Dead rock band starting
using 420 as the term spread among the band’s fans, known as
Deadheads.
So, when you hear the term 420 it refers to marijuana use,
or a term for marijuana itself. Then on January 1st. 2004, the
Governor of California signed the state's Senate Bill 420, which
regulates marijuana used for medical purposes. The 420 term for the
bill was probably chosen because of the pop culture connection
behind the meaning of 420.
